Fence post calculator

The number of posts is the number of sections plus one for each straight run, minus the corners that two runs share. A straight 100-foot fence with posts 8 feet apart has 13 sections (12.5 rounded up) and 14 posts. Each gate needs an extra post so both sides of the opening are supported. FenceCalc counts them for any layout and also tells you how long the posts must be.

Posts are usually bought 2 to 3 feet longer than the fence height so they can be buried.

    How the fence calculator works

FenceCalc splits each run into sections no longer than the post spacing, rounding up. Posts are the sections plus one, minus one for each corner shared by two runs, plus one extra post per gate. Rails are sections × rails per section. Pickets are the fence length minus the gate openings, in inches, divided by picket width plus gap, rounded up.

Concrete per hole is the hole's volume minus the post's, from the top of a 6-inch gravel base (if you include one) to ground level, divided by the bag yield and rounded up to whole bags.

Yields are the published figures for Quikrete fast-setting and standard concrete mixes. Results are estimates: buy a few spare pickets and a spare bag, and check local codes, frost depth, HOA rules and underground utilities (call 811 in the US) before you dig.

    Frequently asked questions

How long should fence posts be?

Height above ground plus hole depth: an 8 ft post for a 6 ft fence set 2 ft deep.

    Do corners need extra posts?

A corner post is shared by both runs, so it is counted once. Many builders use a heavier post or extra bracing there.

What size post for a 6 ft fence?

4×4 posts are standard; 6×6 is used for gates, tall fences or windy sites.
